“That might help you get very good at burning fat, but you won’t be very good at whatever exercise it is you’re doing,” he said. “Without enough fuel, you won’t get the intensity of training you need to get improvements.”

The body has several ways of storing energy. You’ve probably heard of the big three: sugars, carbohydrates, and fats.

When you exercise, the uses them in order, starting with the easiest to digest to the most difficult which is, again: sugar (glucose), carbohydrates , and fatty acids (which are the major component to burn body fat).

The body’s first choice for energy is sugar. There is a small quantity of sugar in the cells of the body and some dissolved in the blood. When this first-line energy source is depleted, the body moves on to a carbohydrate stored in muscle and liver cells, called glycogen.

Even after a full night’s sleep, your glycogen stores won’t be depleted. But the amount of free sugar in your cells and bloodstream will be significantly reduced.

When blood sugar drops, a hormone called glucagon is released. Glucagon starts the process of liberating fatty acids from fat, which is stored around the body in a chemical called triclyceride (also triacylglyceride), in a process called lipolysis.

The freed fatty acids are transported around the body by the bloodstream and taken up by other tissues. Most tissues (like muscle) can use the fatty acids for energy directly.

During fatty acid metabolism, the liver also releases glucose and chemicals called “ketone bodies”, which are needed to feed the brain, because brain tissue can’t use fatty acids for energy.

Since you don’t have to warm up as much before you start burning fat, you could shave 5 to 10 minutes off the length of a workout exercise and burn the same amount of fat that you would later in the day.

If you work out for the same length of time as usual, you’ll burn an extra couple minutes’ worth of fat.
